The game plan for Rossville’s soccer team Saturday in its sectional
semifinal against McCutcheon was to score a quick goal and jump on the
Mavericks early.

But it was McCutcheon who did the early
scoring, tallying two goals in the first 10 minutes on its way to a 9-1
victory. The Mavericks would go on to win the sectional championship,
defeating Lafayette Jeff, 1-0.

“Those two quick goals really got my players back on their heels,” Rossville coach Joel Wilson said.

To try to get that early goal, Joel Wilson stuck top goal-scorer Ian
Brown at forward and he was finally able to score on a penalty kick in
the 20th minute. Brown was also the player who drew the penalty. After
that, Brown moved back to midfield.

“We picked up the pace again after that,” Wilson said. “But at that point, McCutcheon figured they got us outmanned.”

“Playing a lot of Indy teams, they are used to playing that high
pressure, high aggressive game and I don’t think we really played
against a team this season with the aggressiveness that McCutcheon came
out with. I think that was the difference and set us back a little and
we weren’t able to overcome it.”

Wilson said he used the second half as an opportunity to get some younger players an opportunity to play in the sectional.

“I think we’re learning what it’s going to take to compete at the
sectional level,” Wilson said. “I think it’s difficult for some of the
younger players that first time playing o that turf surface. Hopefully,
we can take that and build on that for next year.”
